Papanca
22. * Papanca
Dictionary Definition: Refers to conceptualization of the world through the use of ever-expanding language and concepts. It is intended to elucidate reality, although it has the unexpected result of blotting out or reducing direct nonverbal sensory perception. In part, this is due to each person's limitation of how many things they can pay attention to at the same time. A person who can only attend to two things at once, may be able to receive a direct sensory picture of the tree while at the same time saying "The apple tree in the garden," but the picture will not be as complete. (Wikipedia)
My Definition: World creation, the linguistic “excess” responsible for and resulting from mistaking interpretation for reality. Papanca is one of the roots of dukkha.
Journal Entry April 12th: A quote that stuck with me from the readings this week was “To know yourself is to forget yourself. To forget yourself is to be awakened by all things,” by Eihei Dogen. This quote talks perfectly about forgetting yourself and the stories you create about the moments of experience. We must remember that the finger pointing at the moon is not the moon, it is just a story about the moon.
Journal Entry April 17th: Don’t take the story of the Buddha to be the Buddha. We are caught in habits of making things how we believe they should be, which creates dukkha for us. Upon reflection I realize that I often very high expectations about what is supposed to happen in my relationships. It was the downfall of one of my relationships. I am looking back on that today and reflecting on how I could have been more aware, not trying to control every moment of the relationship. After reflecting I will take action in the future to prevent the same mistake from happening but for now I am going to breathe and let it go.

Journal Entry April 15th: Because of this class, I am starting to reflect on previous relationships I have had that have ended whether friendships or romantically. I have come to realize that I am a very closed and private person which is bringing me more dukkha and second arrows.

Realize
24. *Realize
Dictionary Definition: Become fully aware of (something) as a fact; understand clearly: "he realized his mistake at once". Cause (something desired or anticipated) to happen: "his worst fears have been realized". (Free Dictionary)
My Definition: To fully understand. To see all part of everything that is connected to what you are realizing. It is one of the first steps to becoming an enlightened being.
Journal Entry April 22nd: We could say that to realize enlightenment, we have to forget that we ever wanted it. Realizing and being aware are the first steps in every part of the Buddhism path. The first step to eliminating dukkha is being able to realize it and see it exactly for what it is. A quote that I really liked from the reading this week was, " Reality does not transcend time, it is not novel, but always new. It is not being, but becoming." I thought this quote really showed us how interrelated this is with the three marks of existence. We see that everything is impermanent and the non-self through being.
